I remember the first time we met. You were hustling down the hall toward me, a smile on your face, no sign what-so-ever that I had inconvenienced you by calling you to come and assess a patient. You were friendly, patient, gentle, and kind.......to the patient, and to me (still a nursing student).....as you taught us both about the c-section infection that she was experiencing.
You continued to smile as you visited me in the wee hours of the morning while I worked the night shift. I really believed you were there by coincidence. The other nurses believed differently - in hindsite, I laugh at their keen intuition.
You smiled when I admitted I had lied to you even before our first date. Not about to miss the opportunity to get to know you, I enthusiastically accepted your invitation to a jazz concert with an eager "Yes!" to your question of whether I liked jazz music or not. You couldn't have known I hated it.
Sixteen years later and many joys and tribulations richer, you're still smiling. And, my dear, sweet, best friend.....you still make me smile.
I love you. Happy Anniversary.
